"They took us to a barn to stay the night, and at two o'clock in the morning they came for us. On the border, we knew, were soldiers, with guns. And if they hear a little noise, they shoot. The babies were sleeping and the men had to pick them up and carry them. But I was sure they will start to cry. I was wearing three petticoats. I took off my three petticoats and covered over their faces, each with a petticoat. I was afraid they would feel the wind and wake up, and start to cry. And this is how my three children were carried. And I was afraid they will smother."
