 Dilemma by Bobby Pearl

Dilemma by Bobby Pearl

Bronze, 6" x 5.5" x5"

My grandmother and her children joined a small group of Jews traveling to
America. During their flight the group encountered a large body of water
which had to be crossed. Since they had to go in darkness and secrecy, they
could not hire a boat and had to cross through water up to their necks. The
current was strong and the children and the women had to be carried across.
My grandmother came from a deeply religious family and the thought that she
would be carried by a man other than her husband was shocking. She felt she
could neither submit, nor go back. She sat at the edge of the river trying
to come to terms with her dilemma.
Frightened by the delay, the group threatened to leave her behind. My
grandmother rose up, handed her children over to the men to be carried, and
agreed to be carried herself, saying: "So, all right. God will have to be
satisfied."
